„Rakija, one is enough, but two call for more!“
On cold days, members of the Slavic peoples often reach for colourless spirits called rakija. The drink obtained by distilling fermented fruit has an alcohol content varying from 40-60%. That is why it is said that „one is enough and two is too little“. The most famous type of fruit rakija is plum rakija, which is produced by roasting or distilling fermented plums and is especially praised in Lika and Slavonia. Other fruits besides grapes and plums from which rakija is made are apricots, pears, apples, figs, quinces, walnuts, etc. By adding these ingredients, rakija can take on different colours, although its basic taste remains very recognizable.
On the Adriatic, they will offer you grape rakija. It is very often made from "leftovers" when making wine. However, true connoisseurs say that the rakija must be made from the most beautiful bunches of grapes as it would be the most aromatic.
Where does the name rakija come from? The word rakija is of Arabic origin and comes from the word al-rak, which in free translation means sweat. It is assumed that it arrived in our region with the Turks around the 15th Century. But since then, it has lived in our nation and has received almost the status of a symbol.
In the Croatian tradition, the opinion is rooted that rakija "cures all problems" - literally everything. Drinking rakija, according to beliefs, helps with toothache, indigestion and sore throats, reduces muscle pain and it is a useful tool for improving bad mood... it has a really special effect. Some even believe that a back massage with rakija containing herbs removes pain in that part of the body. Or when you have a muscle strain, all you need to do is wrap stretched parts of the body in bandages soaked in this rakija - brandy. In any case, rakija is a cure for any problem, a very welcome guest in our nation in the form of aperitifs, digestifs, medical aids and as a source of happiness.
