Lopar: A Story of the Sea, Family, and a Captain’s Dream

A Life Built by the Sea

For Marino Bilić, the sea has always been more than just a workplace — it’s home, a way of life, and a constant source of peace and purpose. Born and raised in Croatia, he grew up immersed in maritime culture, where fishing trips, boat rides, and salt-tinged adventures were part of daily life. It was only natural that his path would one day lead him back to the Adriatic.

His career began on far larger waters. Marino spent over 13 years sailing across the globe as an officer in the merchant navy and offshore industry. During this time, he honed his skills, earned hard-won experience, and developed a deep respect for the sea’s immense power and unpredictability. Yet, despite the adventure, a quiet longing grew — a desire to return to the waters of his youth and share his passion for the sea in a more personal, meaningful way.

The Beginning of Lopar

That dream came to life when Marino purchased the motor vessel Lopar—a significant and sentimental step in his journey. What makes this story even more special is that Marino didn’t do it alone. He partnered with his best man and close friend Stjepan, a lifelong companion and trusted confidant, to make the purchase together. This wasn’t just a business investment—it was a shared vision between two men with saltwater in their souls and tradition in their hearts.

A Ship with History and Heart

Lopar is not just any ship. Built in 1954 for the Yugoslav military, it once patrolled and served with purpose before being handed over to a fishing cooperative in Zadar, where it transported fresh catches from the sea to the shore. Eventually, two families from Krilo Jesenice transformed it into a passenger ship for tourism, preserving its classic lines and unique charm.

When Marino and Stjepan took ownership, they respected its history while giving it new life. The upgrades focused on comfort and functionality—installing a new generator, modern air conditioning, water and bilge pumps, and refreshing the design of the salon and sundeck. But Marino was careful not to change the soul of the ship. He recognized the Lopar’s timeless beauty and worked to enhance it, not replace it.

What’s in a Name?

The name Lopar comes from a beautiful town on the island of Rab. Known for its sandy beaches and welcoming spirit, the town’s essence perfectly reflects the atmosphere Marino wanted to create on board. A place where guests feel relaxed, connected, and at ease. A floating home where the journey is as important as the destination.

A Floating Family Business

Though Marino captains the ship, Lopar is very much a family affair. His wife Lena, though professionally employed elsewhere, always finds time to assist with onboard details—from decorative touches to guest reception. Their young daughter Mia, though not yet ready to take the helm, is already drawn to the ship and the sea. You could say she’s growing up with one foot on land and one on deck.

Marino credits much of his success to the strength and support of his family. While the captain may guide the ship, it’s his loved ones who anchor him—and who remind him of what truly matters at the end of each voyage.

Hospitality at Sea

Aboard Lopar, hospitality is more than just service—it’s a philosophy. Marino and his crew work hard to make every guest feel welcome and at home. From the warm smiles that greet you at embarkation to the meticulously prepared meals and spotless accommodations, every detail is handled with care.

What sets Lopar apart, Marino says, is authenticity. Guests aren’t treated like customers—they’re treated like friends. The crew’s genuine interactions, the relaxed and easy-going atmosphere, and those unforgettable swim stops in secluded bays all contribute to a truly memorable experience.

Unforgettable Moments

Over the years, Marino has collected countless stories aboard Lopar, but a few stand out. One of the most touching moments was when a couple chose the ship as the venue for their wedding. Marino, as captain, was honoured to read the vows and officiate the ceremony. It was a day filled with emotion, joy, and a sense of deep connection between people and the sea.

Equally close to his heart are the annual humanitarian cruises organised for children with disabilities and special needs. The happiness on the children’s faces as they explore the ship, swim in the sea, and experience the magic of a cruise is something Marino cherishes. “There’s no better feeling,” he says.

Advice from the Captain

For those considering a trip aboard Lopar, Marino offers one simple piece of advice: “Come with an open heart. Relax and enjoy. These seven days could be the best of your life.”
He knows that life at sea has a way of shifting perspectives, creating space to breathe, reflect, and connect with nature and people in meaningful ways. For Marino, there’s no greater reward than seeing guests disembark with full hearts and lasting memories.

Carrying the Tradition Forward

In many ways, Lopar is a symbol of Marino’s journey—from offshore sailor to proud captain and family man. It’s a testament to his deep respect for tradition, his love for the sea, and his belief in the power of hard work, humility, and heart.

And it all began with a dream shared between mARINO and his best man — two men who believed that a ship could be more than just a vessel. That it could be a home, a legacy, and a story worth telling.
