Vis

The island of Vis was closed to tourists until 1990 as it was used as an army base in former Yugoslavia and therefore it has kept the charm of the Mediterranean as it once was.

In the past, the island was a site of many historical war battles and numerous ships were sunk in the area. Even to this day, divers and archaeologists continue to discover new locations, Greek and Roman amphorae and other treasures. Regardless if you are a certified scuba diver or if you’ve never tried it if you are interested in that, we recommend you to visit one of the local dive shops and try one of the organized dives in the area.

In the town of Vis, visit the Church of Our Lady and the Archaeological Museum (approx. 5 minutes walking distance east from the ferry dock). The museum is open only June-Sept, 9-13h and 17-21h, every day except Sundays and national holidays. The museum collection holds many valuable exhibits, both land and marine, as well as many exhibits depicting lifestyle (housing, work, jewellery…) dating back as far as Hellenistic times. It is worth the visit.

The suburb of Kut with renaissance summer houses built by the local nobles is situated 500 metres from the Town Museum. A 15-minute walk further takes you to a small wooded peninsula with a tiny walled garden known as the British Cemetery. Close to the Cemetery is one of the prettiest beaches in town.

Walk west from the ferry dock to the Ancient Greek Cemetery, then another 200 metres to the Roman Baths and Franciscan Monastery. Another 20-minute walk pass by the hotel Issa to the George the Third Fortress built in 1813 by the British to protect the harbour of Vis (today it is a nightclub). Take a local bus or a taxi to explore the lovely town of Komiža on the other side of the island.

The Blue Cave is a beautiful natural phenomenon on the islet Biševo, just in front of the town of Komiža. The light goes through the cave and reflects on the water in such a way it paints everything in a wonderful blue tone. The cave is tiny so you can only enter with a small boat and is available for a visit only if the weather and water level are suitable.

Vis is known for its stunning landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and starry nights, Lastovo is a haven for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Explore its rugged coastline, charming villages, and lush forests, or dive into its vibrant underwater world.
