Meet Captain Drago Nazor: Steering Tradition Aboard MV Antonela

27-05-2025
Drago

A Captain’s Journey: From Childhood Decks to Commanding the Antonela

While most kids spent their summers on land, Drago Nazor was learning to tie knots and steer ships. From his earliest childhood memories, summer vacations were spent aboard his father’s ship, while winters brought days of helping with maintenance and preparations for the next sailing season.

The love for ships and the sea has been passed down through generations in the Nazor family, originating from his grandfather and father. Continuing this proud maritime tradition seemed like the natural course for Drago. By the time he was 20 years old, he had already taken the helm of his own vessel, Antonela

Now, heading into his sixth season as captain, he looks back with pride on the path that brought him here. One of the most amusing moments in his career, he recalls, is the look of surprise on guests’ faces when they first see how young their captain is.

More Than a Job: The Heart of the Nazor Family

Today, the maritime tradition is still a family affair. Drago’s retired father manages logistics behind the scenes, roles once filled by Drago’s mother, while Drago oversees operations, maintenance, and the guest experience. Every family member plays a part in keeping things shipshape.

But for Drago, the most important element is creating unforgettable memories for his guests.

“It’s not just about sailing from one island to another,” he says. “It’s about discovering hidden gems, reading the group, and delivering something special every time.”

From comfort and safety to storytelling and spontaneity, it’s this personal touch that defines a voyage with Drago.

When asked what he’d tell young people considering life at sea, he smiles:

Start early. No one is born knowing this job. You’ll learn as you go, and if you love the sea, it’ll be the best decision you ever make.

M/V Antonela: Where Tradition Meets Comfort

Built in 2007 and welcomed into the Nazor family fleet over a decade ago, Antonela is a ship that blends old-world charm with modern ease. Interestingly, the name came from the previous owner, who combined the names of his daughters, Antonija and Nela, to create a vessel name that now stands for warmth and hospitality.

Drago fondly remembers when his father, then owner of a much smaller wooden boat, first stepped aboard Antonela:

“He was in awe. He couldn’t believe we were actually buying it.”

That leap from a modest wooden ship to a sleek, steel-hulled vessel marked a turning point for the family.

At 33 meters long and 7.3 meters wide, Antonela strikes the perfect balance between space and intimacy. The ship’s wooden accents recall classic sailing yachts, while its ongoing upgrades, from refreshed cabins to a renovated salon, keep it feeling fresh and inviting.

The Antonela Experience: Relaxed, Real, and Remarkable

Forget giant cruise ships and impersonal itineraries. Life aboard Antonela is relaxed, friendly, and authentic. Guests quickly feel like part of the crew, welcomed by a young, enthusiastic team always ready to lend a hand (or snap a sunset photo).

Drago’s personal pride in the vessel is visible in every polished rail and thoughtful detail. He ensures Antonela is in peak condition each season, ready to offer guests not just a cruise, but a story to tell.

His advice for anyone considering joining the journey?

Don’t overthink it. Don’t research too much before you arrive — just go with the flow and let the experience surprise you.”

With Captain Drago at the helm, Antonela is more than just a ship. She’s a floating piece of Adriatic heritage—inviting you to slow down, soak in the beauty, and sail into something unforgettable.
