Meet the Family Behind M/V Viktorija: A Legacy Anchored in Passion and the Adriatic Sea

Kristijan Zemunik is the proud owner of the charming wooden vessel Viktorija, a family-run cruise vessel offering unforgettable journeys along the Croatian coast. Together with his family, he has nurtured a deep connection to the sea — a love affair that began in childhood with fishing trips and long days on small boats, and evolved into a full-blown maritime legacy.

Born to Sail

The Zemuniks have been in the maritime business for over seven years. What started as a shared family passion soon became a profession. Kristijan officially became the owner of Viktorija in 2018 and captained her for four years before passing the helm to his son Boris. That passing of the torch wasn’t just symbolic—it marked a new chapter powered by youthful energy and unwavering commitment.

Meet Captain Boris: Young, Capable, and Born for the Role

Born in 2002, Boris Zemunik is anything but your average young captain. A graduate of the General Gymnasium in Omiš, Boris was an accomplished athlete in taekwondo and basketball, competing at national-level competitions and even earning a black belt. Beyond his own training, he volunteered to coach younger athletes—a commitment he still honours in the winter months when the ship is docked.

Boris spent his summer breaks learning the ropes aboard Viktorija under the guidance of his father and brother Luka. From deckhand to prep work for seasonal readiness, he quickly became an essential part of the crew. In 2022, when the family needed a new captain, Boris didn’t hesitate. At just 21 years old, he officially took command of Viktorija for the 2024 season. Luka, meanwhile, now oversees maintenance and crew coordination.

Despite his youth, Boris commands trust with quiet confidence. Guests quickly recognize his professionalism, openness, and attentiveness. Whether it’s recommending hidden local gems or ensuring every onboard detail is running smoothly, Captain Boris is always ready to go the extra mile.

It’s a Family Affair

Although not every family member sails, everyone contributes to keeping the Viktorija experience seamless. From logistics on land to onboard hospitality, it’s a team effort—one where shared values and genuine care shape every aspect of the journey.

About the Ship: M/V Viktorija

Originally built in 1948 as a ferry, Viktorija was transformed over the years into a boutique cruise ship. The Zemunik family acquired her in 2018 and gave her a loving makeover, including full air-conditioning in each of the 16 cabins.

With a length of 24 meters and a beam of 6 meters, she accommodates up to 32 guests. The upper deck holds 12 A-category cabins, while the lower deck houses 4 B-category cabins—all bunk-style. The crew includes the captain, chef, waiter, and two sailors.

The upper sun deck is a favourite guest hangout, ideal for soaking up the sun and sipping cocktails. Below deck, the rear lounge offers a cosy space for evening socialising, often with music and drinks flowing.

What Makes Viktorija Special?

Let’s put it this way: it’s not just about the ship—it’s about the people. The crew’s top priority is guest safety and enjoyment. Daily swim stops in secluded coves? Absolutely. Inflatable floats with drink service delivered straight to the water? You bet. The Viktorija isn’t just a boat—it’s a floating Adriatic playground.

Fluent English-speaking crew members ensure smooth communication, and their flexibility and attentiveness help create a relaxed and personalised cruising experience.

Advice from the Captain(s)

To first-time cruisers, the message is simple: Don’t overthink it. Let go of the schedule and dive into the moment. Enjoy the swim stops, explore the destinations, savour the local culture, and let the rhythm of the sea guide your day.

To young people dreaming of a life at sea, Boris’s story is proof that you don’t need decades of experience to make waves—you just need passion, discipline, and a love for the journey.
