Visit to the Museum of Hum Aura
On June 29th our representatives visited the newly opened Museum of Hum Aura and the new distillery Aura- in Hum.
Hum is a small but magical medieval town in Istria, surrounded by city walls that had protected it for centuries from frequent invasions of Venetian and Ottoman armies. It has only 28 habitants and is the smallest town in the world.
The owners of the museum on the terrace of the newly opened Distillery bar – presented biska, a traditional Istrian schnaps made of mistletoe; and Teranino – a liqueur made of wine Teran- that slowly but steadily conquers the world. After a few words of welcome, and a delicious tasting and presentation of some special Aura drinks, we visited the museum.
The museum treasures more than 1500 exhibits, arranged in 11 thematic units. The artefacts demonstrate life and traditions in the smallest town on Earth – Hum in Istria. Every unit represents an indispensable segment of the lifestyle and dominant craft and occupations of our ancestors in the past 150 years: an old pharmacy, school, postal office, shop, distillery, shoemaking, carpentry, tailoring, a mill, fresco painting, and a thematic room dedicated to Glagolitic script – a medieval Croatian alphabet and the oldest Slavic alphabet.
Some of these units are interactive so in the old school, one could write and send a postcard using Glagolitic script, participate in fresco painting, and make flour from corn. The pharmacy holds all the necessary ingredients, allowing visitors to make their own creams and lotions.
By opening the Museum of Hum Aura, the Sirotić family continues the path of the revitalization of Hum, initiated in the 70s when 11 monuments were erected in the Glagolitic Lane. Fifty years ago, an ancient tradition was restored – 11 judges elect the town’s prefect for a year.
Now, thanks to the Sirotić family, the smallest town on Earth has gained its first museum dedicated to the traditions and the lifestyle of its habitants.
Have a look at the photos to gain an idea of its spellbinding atmosphere, before visiting it yourself – it's well worth it!
