Adriatic Sky: Navigating Dreams with Captain Nikola Vuković

Captain Nikola’s story begins in Krilo Jesenice, a small coastal village near Split with a reputation as the cradle of Croatian maritime tradition. His family's connection to the sea dates back more than a century, when his ancestors first set sail transporting goods—wine, olive oil, and cherries—from Jesenice to Trieste.

After World War II, as the region rebuilt itself, the family adapted to the new needs of the time. They began sand mining, a vital industry for post-war construction, and in 1971, took another leap forward—into tourism. Since then, nine different ships have sailed under the Vuković name. Today, two proudly operate within the Katarina Line fleet: MV Adriatic Sun, where Nikola’s father Stipe commands, and MV Adriatic Sky, where Nikola carries the legacy forward.

Captain Nikola didn’t simply choose this life—it chose him. He’s been at sea since the age of six, learning the ropes from his father Stipe, a seasoned “old-school” captain who has been sailing the Adriatic for over 60 years. There’s hardly a bay or port that Stipe hasn’t explored—and he passed all that knowledge down to Nikola, just as grandfather Nikola had passed it down to him.

After completing both secondary and higher maritime schools, Nikola went on to sail as an officer on long voyages across all continents, gaining global experience and honing his leadership. “The only place I haven’t sailed to is Antarctica,” he says with a smile.

Built in 2021, MV Adriatic Sky is a sleek and modern small cruiser designed for up to 38 guests, offering 19 elegant cabins, a stylish restaurant, and a spacious sun deck complete with a jacuzzi. Though the ship is state-of-the-art, the energy aboard is timeless—a blend of Dalmatian warmth and seafaring excellence.

Behind every successful captain is a crew—but behind Captain Nikola is also a devoted family. His wife Lucija and their three children, Mia, Ana, and young Stipe (age 6), are his constant support. And little Stipe? He’s already showing signs of becoming the fifth generation of Vuković captains. Just as Nikola was prepared by his grandfather and father, he’s gently passing the wheel to his own son, making sure the tradition continues far into the future.
